COURSE 2350 | 2-DAY SESSION
Business Process Analysis and Design

Course Details

Learn the skills and knowledge to apply proven techniques in building a process model
The process modeling course provides the participants the opportunity to learn the skills and knowledge essential for applying the most effective techniques in modeling a business for analysis of the current state and for the design of the future state. The application of the techniques will be presented as part of an overall framework identifying key deliverables and the major steps from modeling and analyzing the current state to the design of the future state.

The measure of performance of the program is for the participants to reach the level of proficiency needed to apply the techniques and analytical framework in their work assignments.

The learning environment
In addition to the lecture and discussion of class specific topics the group exercises are designed to apply the techniques in creating the required work products from an examination of a realistic business scenario. The exercises are designed to provide the participants the opportunity to evaluate and work with a number of situations designed to represent actual conditions found in a real business. As part of the learning process the participants will be asked to share their answers and the assumptions made in creating the required work products. The review of the group activities will be led by facilitators experienced in modeling and analyzing a business.

In-Class Workshops and Group Exercises:
The participants will be assigned a number of individual practices to reinforce the application of individual techniques. In addition a number of group activities will be assigned for the participants to apply a number of the individual techniques and create specific deliverables.

1. Create major process model and assess their performance
The participants will be provided with information on the business to create a major process model and conduct an assessment of the performance. Work products include the determination of process criticality and the selection of measures and performance targets. The following work products are required:

  • Major process model and description of properties
  • Map of the business process to the organization
  • Documentation of business events
  • Alignment of major processes to strategy
  • Selection of major process measures and targets
  • Assessment of major process performance

2. Decompose and describe the selected major process
Additional information will be provided on the internal workings of a major process to create a current state model of the processing logic excluding technology and organizational enablers. Participants will be expected to build the model in several layers of details from an examination of the available information. The exercise requires the creation of the following work products:

  • Process decomposition of the selected major process
  • Description of business process logic
  • Map of the sub processes to the organization
  • Additional modeling of business events
  • Documentation of elementary processes

3. Model current state implementation of selected sub process
Additional information will be provided on the method of implementation of the selected major process for the participants to create the following work products:

  • Map logical model to work flow model
  • Creation of work flow model
  • Description of roles

4. Detailed analysis of current state performance
This exercise will ask the participants to conduct a detailed analysis of problems and the identification of the root causes. Assignment will include the analysis of essential or logical process and also of the performance of the technology and organizational enablers. The following results are required:

  • Selection of sub process measures and performance targets
  • Documentation of performance gaps
  • List of root causes

5. Design the future state
From the analysis of the current the participants will select a number of value opportunities and create a value proposition. In addition, the assignment includes the design of a future state process model. The work products include:

  • Selection of value opportunities and value drivers
  • High level future state process design
  • Detailed future state process model design

ASPE has been reviewed and approved as a CPE training provider for the National Assoication of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA). 12 CPEs are awarded upon full completion of Business Process Analysis and Design.
