COURSE 1200 | 2-DAY SESSION
Hands-On Wireless Network Defense
Course details
The Reality of Wireless
This course is designed to help you understand the vulnerabilities associated with wireless technologies, the attack methods intended to exploit those vulnerabilities, and the countermeasures you can implement to defend your network against those attacks. Wireless networks (WLANs) provide the performance we've come to expect from wired networks, and the freedom that comes with mobility. Whether it's surfing the internet from your porch swing or accessing the corporate intranet from your conference room, mobility is addictive. New productivity-enhancing applications for wireless emerge on an almost daily basis. And not only are the users mobile, the network itself is mobile. Fast-growing organizations can deploy a wireless LAN in a new facility quickly and easily. When the need for a larger facility arises, the wireless network can be moved and redeployed just as easily.
What You Have to be Concerned About
Wireless technologies offer exciting new business opportunities, costsaving IT solutions, and productivityincreasing user mobilitybut it comes with serious consequences. Wireless communications that are not properly encrypted can be intercepted, opening a door into your entire network. A low-end laptop, a $40 wireless network card, specialized freeware packet-sniffing and discovery software will get hackers into the vast majority of wireless networks. This course will show you the vulnerabilities of wireless networks and wire line networks that have“rogue” wireless deployment. You will learn the attack methods used to get into wireless networks and the countermeasures you should deploy to defend your network. Tie it all together by learning the configurations, deployment guidelines and tools you need to successfully defend your wireless network so you can confidently reap the benefits of wireless solutions.
You Will Receive the ASPE Wireless Countermeasures Toolkit Free
This toolkit has all the software you need to assess and penetration test your wireless networks. You will use this toolkitalong with your Free Proxim Harmony wireless cardin class by performing hands-on attacks on a live wireless infrastructure. This hands-on experience will give you the skills you need to effectively defend your wireless network from attacks.
Your ASPE Wireless Countermeasures Toolkit includes:
- Bootable Linux CD with all the needed tools such as Kismet, Ethereal and AirSnort
- Proxim Harmony Wireless card with an external connector
20 Practical, Immediately Useful Benefits of Attending:
- Recognize patterns of known attacks, identify abnormal network activity and detect policy violations for WLANs.
- Perform wireless packet capture using Ethereal to see the 802.11traffic and learn how the wireless devices find each other
- Detect closed wireless networks using active scanning such as Kismet to mimic a hacker's approach to attack your network
- Perform wired-side Network Discovery using SNScan to scan SNMP traffic
- Practice with white-hat and black-hat tools to assess wireless network security
- Operate an RF Spectrum Analyzer to detect Denial of Service attacks interference such as RF Jamming, Signal Bombing and War Spamming
- Practice both active and passive scanning techniques to detect rogue access points
- Capture and decode wireless network traffic using AiroPeek, AirMagnet and WiFiScanner
- Manage AirSnort to crack a WEP key and set up a Man-in-the-Middle attack
- Circumvent a MAC Access List using MAC Spoofing
- Identify where a threat comes from and how to configure any and all parameter settings to minimize your risk
- Discover the new security-related standards such as WPA, EAP,
- Enhanced WEP and what can they do to defend your network
- Examine and implement a multi-layered defense strategy that minimizes wireless network vulnerabilities
- Setup and Run FakeAP to Simulate War Drivers
- Explore how wireless Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) monitor and analyze user and system activities
- Evaluate commercial intrusion detection systems such as Airdefense RogueWatch and Airdefense Guard
- Learn how wireless IDSs gather local wireless transmissions and generate alerts
- Review security capabilities for Consumer to Enterprise grade Access Points
- Get a visual into how WiMAX and WiFi interact together and the security concerns associated with this new technology
Who Should Attend:

Special Section on WiMAX Wireless Access Technology
We stand at the verge of true mass-market carrier deployment of Broadband Wireless Access. There is confusion about the technology - specifically how WiMAX differs from 802.16, and the different versions of the standard. This special section will cut through the hype to provide a technical overview of the WiMAX solution as it applies to different operators such as fixed, WISPs, and cellular operation. You will also get a visual into how WiMAX and WiFi interact together and the security concerns associated with this new technology.
- The State Of WiMAX
- WiMAX Demystified
- Implementing Broadband Wireless
- Real World WiMAX Applications
- Security Concerns
- WiMAX Development Trends
